Racing for a Cure
Why I’m Racing For a Cure
This week has been very humbling for me. I have spent the last 2 weeks at a hospital watching someone that I care deeply about, holding onto life with everything in her. She refused to give up on a disease that has been a part of her life for 16 years. On September 30th 2009 at the very young age of 45, she won the battle of her life. She went home to be with Jesus Christ.
She had already battled 2 different types of Breast Cancer. Then she fought Carcinoid Cancer in the Intestine, Colon and Appendix.
When she learned that she had Small Cell Lung Cancer she knew this battle would be different. Different because she had just lost her Father to the same disease last year. Different because there really isn’t a cure for Small Cell, and different because her body was already so weakened by all the previous illnesses she had fought.
I watched in amazement as she went through the Chemo treatments and Radiation Therapy. I wondered if I could have had the strength to go through what she was going through with the odds of surviving so unfairly stacked against me.
I have had cancer, but not to the extent that she had. I know it takes a lot of courage to go through it and keep faith that it can be beat.
I’ve lost many friends to Cancer and I want to do everything I possibly can to help raise money for cancer research and awareness. Without it we will still be saying goodbye to the people we love long before we should.
As I watched the directors slowly lower the lid on her casket I realized that DJuana did not lose this fight – at that very second she assured me that she still believes there is hope that one day there will be no more small children crying because their Grandmother is lying in a casket not answering them or playing with them like she usually does. DJuana believed that one day there would be a cure, that one day loved ones will not have to say good-bye to their husband, Father, Mother, sister, wife or child because of cancer. What I saw and realized was very overwhelming and brought tears to my eyes. On her left arm, were two, yellow live strong arm bands. She kept her faith and I will continue it.
My goal is to find sponsors that share this same dream. My hope is to Race in the 2010 ARCA Series or the Camping World Truck Series. I will be racing “For a Cure”.
